As with all historical fiction, Jaigirdar has taken some liberties, but she’s also taken great pains to represent the people who “might have been there.

Josefa, a thief, chooses and then leads the girls on their daring escapade – they all have skills that will come in handy in the heist; Hinnah is an acrobat from the circus, Violet an actress with amazing talent, and Emilie an artist who can copy absolutely anything. And while it’s certainly true, that your station in life was a deterministic factor in your fate, the lower the Class, the lower the chances you made it to a lifeboat, there is another group whose odds fall below even that.Unlike the rest of them, Emilie had all the privilege in the world, and that privilege was more than just wealth. My biggest gripe was how Hinnah's family fed into the same old narrative of oppressive, neglectful, backward brown parents. Now Tristan has to deal with his wayward sibling, Devin’s Brazilian bride, in addition to his own wife and his aunt’s pampered pooch. When not writing, she can be found ranting about the ills of colonialism, playing video games, and expanding her overflowing lipstick collection.

Emilie, who’s been alone in the world since her dad died, dreams of connecting with her mother’s family in Haiti. B]rief chapters in alternating perspectives reveal conflicting interests, hidden motives, and mutual pining. Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of Time's Best YA books of all time, gives Titanic an Ocean’s 8 makeover in a heist for a treasure aboard the infamous ship that sank in the Atlantic many years ago.Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of Time‘s Best YA books of all time, gives Titanic an Ocean’s 8 makeover in a heist for a treasure aboard the infamous ship that sank in the Atlantic many years ago. The book is fast paced which I guess is normal for a ya book, but the writing was very simple and often times flat, and the events seemed so rushed that it felt mostly like a middle grade instead of a young adult book. A catastrophe like the Titanic is fertile ground for moments of unrequited heroics, acts of sublime courage and grace as many on board were knowingly facing their final moments on this earth. Narrator Sohm Kapila creates unique voices for each girl as she tells her story in alternating chapters.
