Yes, this is a movie with a dark, horror themed edge, so perhaps it’s not entirely unexpected, but in a novel that, superficially at least, speaks more to Curtis Hanson’s LA Confidential or Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, than it does William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, there is something in it that has the capacity to make the skin crawl, and certainly kept me on edge. Such is Carlton’s serenity that, for a moment, Mary Rourke can believe she is asleep, rather than dead, and expects to see the chest rise to take a dreamy breath. He thinks of rising from his chair to examine the books on the shelves, but the black gaze of the huge dog keeps him pinioned. Characters: Protagonist and Hollywood fixer Mary Rourke, who is terrific and deserves her own full book, plus a wide and distinctly varied supporting cast in all three time periods. It is actually three stories in one and they all work well as the reader tries to figure out how they are related.

There’s also an interesting cast of characters, notably Mary Rourke who is the ‘fixer’ employed by the studio making the film. The white shields of wall are broken by vibrant modern paintings and pieces of hacienda-style furniture, the jacaranda wood twisting and rippling like dark muscle and sinew. But nothing in Hollywood is ever what it seems, and cynical fixer Rourke, more used to covering up the truth for studio bosses, finds herself seeking it out. Four further novels have been made into films (in one of which Craig Russell makes a cameo appearance as a German detective).

She knows—as everyone in Hollywood’s inner circles knows—that Norma Carlton and Veronica Stratton are— were—bitter rivals. Why did the witch, supposedly haven convinced everyone of her death by suicide, make one female fixer believe she died by murder thus starting an investigation? In an age when far too many same-old-same-old books are clogging the charts, The Devil’s Playground – fresh, forceful, elegant but wild – deserves to crash the bestseller party. His previous works include The Devil Aspect, the Fabel Series of thrillers and the Lennox Series of noir mysteries. He senses a greater absence: no photographs grace the walls or punctuate the bookshelves; no painting hangs from the picture rail. Those few seconds of film are supposed to give a clue to the identity of the murderer—someone connected to the movie and connected to the kind of weird secret stuff that was going on in the background.
