There was potential for some interesting explorations on family dynamics, domestic violence and complicated grief, but that didn't happen here. I just wish it was easier to follow and that we got to know the characters even better so that those moments held more weight. This is a tender story about families and how you need them to cope through some of the worse possible times of your lives.

While tempers escalate, all Tom wants are “ice creams in the shape of Sonic the Hedgehog … Not only do they look awesome but he imagines they probably turn your tongue and lips blue, which will be a lot of fun because he can lie on the ground and pretend that he’s died. After their father’s sudden death in America, where he was living with his new wife, the pair come together. The novel is a serious and very accomplished examination of what it means to love and grieve for someone who might seem unlovable. A sensitive look at grief, families, ambition, anger and the complexity of loving and hating someone all at once.Tom, the elder, is working there in an English-themed pub, avoiding the failure of his acting career (“not knowing what he is doing in Paris feels more productive than not knowing at home”).

And the novel is a serious and very accomplished examination of what it means to love and grieve for someone who might seem unlovable. The withholding of information is masterfully sustained as we come to understand why they have responded to their father’s death with such profound ambiguity.

It should be a time to comfort each other, but there's always been a distance to their relationship. A slow burn portrayal of how families can pull us apart but also how two siblings can find their way back to each other and to themselves. Our understanding of the characters is quite limited to their relationship and history with their father.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Tom and Billie’s memories, vivid with the clarity that childhood shame or fear can retain, are therefore presented with the same immediacy as the days of limbo between death and funeral. This book has opened my eyes and made me realise to be grateful for who you have and what you have got.Intermittent scenes show episodes from this history that allow the reader glimpses of the threat that shadowed Tom and Billie through childhood. The climax of the book is a visit by Tom and Billie, along with Tom’s workmates, to the Paris catacombs, in a somewhat heavy-handed metaphor for the hero’s descent to the underworld to confront the monster. Deep Down is something altogether darker; an examination of the legacy of abuse shot through with sharp wit and compassion.
