There were two quotes that really jumped out to me in this book ‘To render us subhuman’ and ‘could death be better than life’ sitting at home reading this book i felt awful for what they went through, how anyone could possibly not treat another human as just that, a human. Despite the trauma and horrors of the experiences that Lily relays, there is always an underlying message of hope. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Apparently during the pandemic, a 96 year old Auschwitz surviver was tearing up TikTok with her great-great-grandson talking about her survival. Every Holocaust survivor’s story I read adds a new perspective on the unimaginable suffering they went through.

Having read this book I am struck by two things; Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and her great grandson, Dov Forman, is also a very remarkable young man. It allows you to follow along, understanding why she makes the choices she makes - especially when she is not given any choice. For people who read an Holocaust Survivor story for the first time, i hope it will give you the will to read other story like hers, they did go through almost the same thing but they don't remember it the same way and most of all, they don't describe it the same way. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It begins with her childhood in Hungary, before she and her family are taken to Auschwitz where her mother and two sisters perish. She is an inspiration and what was done to her and her family is a warning that we must never turn our backs on evil. Isso é tão triste, o mundo recusar-se a escutar o que os sobreviventes tinham para contar, porque era demasiado difícil, porque sentiam culpa, porque era mais simples fingir que não aconteceu.

She is 97 years old, an incredible woman that has survived the camps, and went through so much hope, love, strength and yet she has survived Covid-19. So many people died because they were different than those who thought of themselves as the master race. As the allies advanced into German territory in early 1945, Lily and her group were sent on one of the notorious death marches across the territory ahead of the advancing liberators, before they were eventually saved by stumbling across some American soldiers. Myslím na to, o koľko lepšie poznám svoju prababičku než pred rokom, keď sme so štyrmi generáciami rodiny šťastne oslavovali jej narodeniny v Bournemouthe. Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and Dov, her great-grandson is a credit to her and an incredible young man.On arrival, Lily's mother and her youngest sister and younger brother were immediately sent to the gas chamber, while Lily and her other two sisters Rene and Piri survived to go through months of work, exhaustion and starvation. Lily, having gone through so much, radiates strength and wisdom and both she and Dov warmed my heart. I needed to read this book, but I did expect it to be a little less refined in writing due to the TikTok aspect.

The true memoir of Lily's moving journey from Hungary to Auschwitz, Israel to London should be read to understand the full horrors of the time. The book, which she co-wrote with her great-grandson, Dov Forman, is permeated by a sense of hope that Lily retains in both her educational work and daily life.I just hope that with her book, her story does not die and that every generation for years to come gets the chance to read it!
