While the book shows that sexual longing and desire cross a large spectrum of identities, that doesn't mean people stop being what their identity is. I try to keep an open mind, but that doesn't mean that I have to put up with more than I can, so understandably I skipped over some chapters (the amount of men fantasizing about doing their mothers or other female relatives is too damn high! Besides expecting fantasies that focused on different psychological elements, I also expected there to be a lot about exploring relationship dynamics in the fantasies, but it was almost entirely just about wanting to do the physical act itself, or remembering doing it. Constant use of the C-word (though used to describe the vulva, not as an epithet for women) among a few other vulgarities. Nancy Friday, best-selling author of feminist and erotic literature, psychoanalyst and socio-sexual historian, has been the leading witer on women’s and men’s sexual fantasies since the publication of her first best-selling erotic book, My Secret Garden .

The wonderful part about the section where straight men fantasize about sex with men is that it shows two things at once--men who identify as straight and men who at the same time fantasize at times about sex with other men. Friday mentions in the introduction that she has digested sexual taboos from women as empowering and progressive but when faced with the same taboos in men's fantasies she was scandalized and disgusted.Men liking consensual, ecstatic sex doesn't have to be distorted into all this underlying "rage" stuff. It is women controlling our own reproduction - not women talking themselves into having more sex in the name of "liberation" - that is where our power against patriarchy lies.

I go back to this book time and time again, not to turn me on, but to give me a deeper understanding of male sexuality. She gave them a legitimate arena where they could share their "secret gardens" -- the hidden and forbidden but nonetheless real and true. I might have been able to finish it if it were around 200 pages, but at 472 pages, it just becomes tiresome and gross, regardless of the psychobabble explanations on the side. However, there were some interesting psychological insights mixed in among the BS, enough to have made it worth reading. It is shocking to me how many of the men contributing, had sex in childhood or early adolescence - with adults or older adolescents as well as with other children, and not uncommonly with family members. Another fascinating aspect of fetishistic thinking is the extraordinary amount of detail connected to the object.

Men in Love goes beyond the cliché of woman seen as either madonna or whore to reveal the conflict of love and rage at the centre of men's emotions. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1955 and moved to Puerto Rico, where she worked as a travel reporter and editor. Without the Freudian commentary the book as a series of fantasies written by men would have been fascinating, it's a shame that it missed the boat. And naturally I did the same and prodded my own boyfriend on a few subjects but the truth is fantasies are fantasies and they aren't real for a reason; mostly because they probably won't happen. I guess that's probably the result of the Internet, 2 Girls 1 Cup makes everything before look tame. Love and sex are two different things, as long as you keep that in mind as well as an open mind this book is pretty damned good!
