I like to see you find a fire(unintentional or not) that does not release deadly toxins. I do believe Vinyl may not be completely sustainable but the upkeep of a product should be viewed as a reason to use. Vinyl products have almost no upkeep when used unlike other types of products. The cost of initial and upkeep down road is much lower than most other types. I for one would prefer to have the lower cost with "some frootprint" then a huge cost that won't make a difference in energy in the future. The rate at which laser cutting machines are being used in vinyl crafting causes more jitters. There are two considerable risks when using laser cutting machines with vinyl. Streaming services such as Spotify have started releasing information about their environmental impact. While the numbers they publish suggest that their carbon footprint is decreasing, they only provide information about their own data centres. However, Spotify has decommissioned most of their own streaming infrastructure and subcontracted that work to the Google Cloud. So the amounts must be significantly higher than what is reported. As more and more streaming services subcontract their data storage and processing needs to cloud corporations, they also subcontract responsibility for the energy requirements and carbon emissions of digital music. As one streaming engineer told me: “As long as we have an ozone layer, we live in the cloud.” These toxic substances include phthalates and lead which have been linked to a range of health issues like cancers and other chronic illnesses. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified these substances forming vinyl as human carcinogens after successful laboratory experiments that proved their toxicity. Most PVC is thrown away because it is extremely difficult to recycle. This situation is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. Because each PVC product contains a unique mix of additives, post-consumer recycling of mixed PVC products is difficult and cannot yield vinyl products with qualities equivalent to the original. PVC products impede municipal plastics recycling, fouling the production lines of other plastics recycling operations, leading plastics recyclers to describe vinyl as a contaminant. Even after 20 years of effort in the U.S., the PVC industry has been unable to establish a credible recycling program or reduce net production of virgin PVC. It is impossible to know the proportion of the effluent in the Chao Phraya or how much of the pollution is directly linked to the production of LPs. One thing, though, is certain. Vinyl records, as well as cassettes and CDs, are oil products that have been made and destroyed by the billion since the mid-20th century. During the US sales peaks of the LP, cassette and CD, the US recording industry was using almost 60m kilos of plastic a year. Using contemporary averages on greenhouse gas equivalent releases per pound of plastic production, as well as standard weight figures for each of the formats, that is equivalent to more than 140m kilos of greenhouse gas emissions each year, in the US alone. Music, like pretty much everything else, is caught up in petro-capitalism. The question of vinyl’s suitability as a green material also persists because vinyl-product manufacturers and trade groups have falsely created the impression that there is a raging “debate” about whether or not vinyl is eco-friendly. But one searches in vain for anyone who champions vinyl as a green building product who does not have an interest in the industry.

Environmental Health Criteria 215 - World Health Organization

While vinyl is widely used both at home, in schools, construction, automotive, and manufacturing sectors, the material itself is toxic. It is bad not only for human health but the ecosystem as well.

In 2021, the 19 PVC factories in the U.S. generated 20 millions of pounds of hazardous waste, according to the report. All that waste is sent from factories to hazardous waste disposal facilities in the South-central U.S., usually via rail.

PVC plastic also emits phthalates , which are a toxin that has been identified as a carcinogen and may present health concerns. In vinyl, phthalates are used as a plasticizer to improve durability, flexibility, longevity and transparency. Craft vinyl has taken the world by storm. If you haven’t already been hooked to crafting with it, you have at least a couple of favorite things decorated using vinyl. Oxy Vinyls has a history of accidents and near misses. Only in January, a tornado moved through the heart of the petrochemical industry east of Houston, with Oxy Vinyls’ VCM plant being in the storm’s path as charted by the National Weather Service. With the popularity of vinyl crafts, it’s vital that we have an eco-friendly alternative to toxic and hazardous PVC vinyl. Though Stahls’ isn’t 100 percent eco-friendly, it’s certainly the safest HTV option on the market and removes a lot of the risk associated with PVC.
